Volker Pape was born in Osnabrück, Germany, in 1955. He obtained his Abitur (German A-levels) at the local natural sciences secondary school, Ratsgymnasium, in 1974; after finishing his military service, he entered the Electrical Engineering programme at the University of Hanover. In 1984, he graduated with the title Diplom-Ingenieur (Masters, electrical engineering).

In the same year, together with Martin Heuser he founded a civil-law partnership for industrial image processing. Two years later this entrepreneurial structure was legally changed to the Viscom Industrielle Bildverarbeitung GmbH. Following the company's conversion to the Viscom AG in 2001, he was appointed as a member of the Executive Board.

Volker Pape is responsible for the business sections Sales, International Business and Company Development and is especially involved in leveraging international expansion. Thanks to his endeavours Viscom, after more than 25 successful years of business, is now European market leader in printed circuit board inspection and ranks among the top three worldwide.

Since 2000, Volker Pape has been actively engaged in the VDMA (Association of German Machine and Plant Construction). From 2003 to 2005, he was chairman of the association's industrial image processing section; from 2005 to 2009, he chaired the VDMA Productronics Industrial Association. Since 2012, he has again been active in the Board of Directors of the association.
