The Hermes Standard: The global standard for M2M communication in SMT lines
You are here:

For complete process data availability, maximum line performance & traceability

The Hermes Standard (IPC HERMES 9852) provides standardized machine-to-machine communication on SMT assembly lines and was developed in 2017 jointly by the leading manufacturers of electronics manufacturing equipment. Viscom has supported the Hermes Standard right from the beginning.

The Hermes Standard is an open TCP/IP and XML-based protocol with integrated data management for SMT manufacturing. It takes the exchange of PCB-relevant data between the various machines in electronic assembly to a new level. Flexible data structures ensure seamless exchange of all major types of printed circuit board related data such as the dimensions of various ID types. This allows you to keep track of any assembled printed circuit board without having to re-read barcodes or other ID tags on each machine. In general, inspection systems complete the central task of quality monitoring and are thus also responsible for process stability in each SMT line. As an essential additional function, barcode verification has been integrated into the protocol, also in the form of an addition to individual barcodes. This contributes to its complete traceability throughout the entire process and significantly facilitates error handling.

The Hermes Standard leverages established network technologies to unlock the full potential of digitalization and smooth connectivity in the electronics assembly process. This makes the Hermes standard a key component of controlled and transparent board flow management.

Advantages

  1. The Hermes Standard is protocol-based rather than signal-based.
  2. The Hermes Standard uses the established basic technologies/standards XML and Ethernet and TCP/IP.
  3. The Hermes Standard provides integrated data management.
